Three years passed.

Three years of quiet mornings, family dinners, doctors’ appointments, experiments, arguments, laughter, and countless days that slowly transformed the Brown mansion from a strange new place into something Nezu could finally call home.

And now, for the first time since becoming brother and sister, Nezu and Segu were about to enter middle school.

“Brother, come on! We’re going to be late!”

Segu stood at the bottom of the stairs, already perfectly dressed in her new school uniform. A dark blazer rested neatly over a crisp white shirt, matched with a checkered skirt that reached her knees. Black tights and simple shoes completed the uniform.

The test began at three in the afternoon.

Eighty percent of it covered material the students should already know from their previous years of school. The remaining twenty percent came from the curriculum they were supposed to study this year.

Before the school year began, the academy had recommended that every student take a quick look through their new textbooks. They weren’t expected to actually learn the material beforehand. The purpose was simply to give them a broad idea of what they would be studying throughout the year.

The director leaned back in his chair, intrigued.

“Hmm… a high-stakes bet?”

“Yes,” Nezu replied. “If I win, I want Teacher Hannah removed from our class. That’s my first condition.”

“And if you lose?”

“I’ll have my family make another generous donation to the school.” Nezu paused as if considering the amount. “Let’s say thirty million?”

The director’s eyes immediately moved toward Diana.

She simply nodded, confirming her son’s offer.

Weak

Nezu ran toward the kitten.

Ironically, what he had tried and failed to do for days, he now accomplished in one swift movement. He scooped the frightened kitten into his arms and immediately distracted it with the toy, gently petting its head until it began to calm down.

Meanwhile, Segu moved beside the girl, shielding her together with her brother.

“Take him and get out of here, Gu.”

Nezu passed the kitten to his sister.

Dumb Princesses

Akane followed Segu to her bedroom to get some new clothes, while Nezu went to his own room.

Nezu undressed and stepped into the shower, washing away the remaining blood and dirt from his wounds. As he carefully cleaned them, he noticed something strange.

The cuts were already healing.

Not just normally, either. If he stared closely enough, he could almost swear the wounds were closing before his eyes. At this rate, there probably wouldn’t even be a mark left by tomorrow.

A Little Stronger

After that day, the three became inseparable.

What had started as a strange encounter over a kidnapped kitten somehow turned into a friendship where seeing only two of them together felt unusual.

At school, Akane joined Nezu and Segu whenever she could. After school, the three often spent time together, and on weekends Akane sometimes appeared so early that Segu accused her of secretly living nearby.

The three played games, studied, wandered around the city, visited parks and shopping centers, and occasionally introduced Akane to ordinary things that were completely new to her.

Worried

Not in years this time, but enough for things that had once felt unusual to become completely normal.

Especially Akane.

What had begun as an unlikely friendship between three children had slowly become something much harder to separate.

If Nezu was somewhere, Segu was usually nearby.

And if the siblings were somewhere, there was a good chance Akane wasn’t far behind.

They studied together, ate together, played together, and wasted entire afternoons doing absolutely nothing of importance together.

Just a Kid

Nezu moved quietly through the school corridors.

Escaping during the initial confusion had been easier than he expected. The armed men had been focused on controlling the students and teachers, shouting orders and making sure nobody tried to run.

Nobody had paid much attention to one missing student.

That had been their first mistake.

Nezu knew the school like the palm of his hand.

He knew which staircases were rarely used, which classroom doors could be opened without making a sound, which corridors could be crossed without being seen from the main hall, and which rooms connected through storage areas most students didn’t even know existed.

Cold

The man walked through the corridor without any particular hurry.

His partner had hurried ahead to catch the kid and put an end to this ridiculous charade.

He had better things to do.

Besides, the whole thing had become ridiculous.

A child had somehow escaped during the initial confusion and had spent the last several minutes making fools out of grown men.

A bucket falling from above a door.

Something slippery spread across a corridor.

The man stumbled through the corridor.

His clothes were soaked, his breathing uneven, and one hand remained against the wall as if he no longer trusted his legs to carry him.

Two of the others spotted him first.

“Where’s your partner?”

The man stopped.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

“Where is he?”

“Dead.”

The word killed every trace of amusement.

“What?”

“The kid killed him.”

One of them frowned.

Common Sense

The police had surrounded the school.

Patrol cars blocked every road leading to the main entrance. Armed officers had taken positions behind vehicles and temporary barricades while more continued to arrive. Ambulances waited farther back, their crews standing ready beside open doors.

Yet no one moved toward the school.

They couldn’t.

This wasn’t an ordinary school.

Children of politicians, executives, diplomats, and some of the wealthiest families in the country studied inside those walls.

Final Countdown

The radio crackled.

At first, nobody in the room paid much attention to it.

There had been noises coming from the radios throughout the entire ordeal. Short orders, confirmations, occasional arguments. Most of it meant nothing to the students and teachers sitting packed together across the floor.

The two armed men guarding them barely reacted either.

One stood beside the main doors, rifle resting against his chest.

The other slowly walked between the rows of hostages.

Smoke and Mirrors

The room had gone quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

More than a hundred students and teachers remained packed together, sitting against walls, between desks, anywhere the two remaining armed men could keep them in sight.

Nobody spoke unless told to.

Nobody made sudden movements.

And, most importantly, nobody looked toward the door for too long.

The two men had learned.

Every sound from the radio had taught them another lesson.

Segu didn’t know exactly what that smile meant.

But he knew Nezu.

It meant he had something.

The man holding Segu didn’t seem to appreciate it.

“What the fuck are you smiling about?”

His arm tightened around Segu’s neck, pulling him firmly against his chest.

The gun remained pressed against the side of Segu’s head.

Nezu’s smile disappeared.

“Nothing.”

“Stay where you are.”

Nezu didn’t move.

The smoke was slowly thinning around them.

The school grounds had finally gone quiet.

Not silent.

There were still ambulances outside the gates. Police radios crackled between officers moving through the buildings. Paramedics crossed the courtyard with equipment and stretchers, and groups of students sat wrapped in blankets while teachers desperately tried to account for everyone.

Parents crowded against the barriers outside.

Reporters had already begun gathering farther down the road.

But the gunfire had stopped.

The screaming had stopped.
